We have received many questions relating to parking and traffic planning for Thomas Jack Park Precinct. Parking is an important consideration for the project and we are following the appropriate assessment, planning and design processes to make sure that parking needs for the future site are met, and that traffic impact on surrounding homes will be minimised.

There is already a small carpark inside Thomas Jack Park on the Pratten Street side. Opportunities to optimise this space will be considered.

We value our RV travellers and tourists and will ensure they are still provided for in the new parking scheme. The project team and traffic engineers will also consider the needs of bus users and end-of-trip facilities for cyclists.

Australian Standards AS2890 states that 2% of parking spaces must be Disabled Accessible Parking Spaces and the future parking plan will meet this criteria.

The process for traffic and parking planning is as follows:

  1. Conduct a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) - this will include expert analysis of how visitation to the library, gallery, cinema, visitor information centre and event spaces could affect traffic flow in all adjacent streets and intersections. This will include motor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
  2. Public transport access - consider how public transport options need to be integrated into planning.
  3. Parking need assessment - calculate the parking demand that each building could create across different scenarios, including traveller RV parking.
  4. Assess existing parking - consider rationalisation of existing on-street parking, assess the existing car park within the park.
  5. Assess any need for additional parking and how this can be accommodated.

This process is currently underway. The parking demand and traffic flow will depend on the capacities, locations and access of the buildings so it is not possible to make assumptions on what may be needed at this stage. The plans will be shared with community once they are finalised.
